Rehab island swaps addicts for kiwi

For A century Rotoroa Island was operated by the Salvation Army as a substance rehabilitation centre.

It's still being used 2X Powerful Slimming for rehabilitation today, however a very different kind. The area is now a reserve for some of recent Zealand's most endangered animal species.

Somewhat, Kiwi chick Morehu's trip is the end of the long journey, but it is also the oncoming of an even bigger one. She's released on Rotoroa Island after being in the care of Auckland Zoo just for on the month.

"End from the line, but she's still doing alright," says senior keeper Michelle Wybrow. "She's doing very well."

Morehu doesn't realize it, but her little arrival in to the world is really a problem. She's part of the new 25-year plan to give a spot for our national bird to thrive in an island safe haven for young kiwi chicks.

Less than Five percent of kiwi chicks within the wild reach maturity, losing greater than can be saved.

"Kiwi cannot get it done by themselves, they need our help," says Ms Wybrow. "We really should protect our national icon - they're so special."

"It's our national bird," says Barrie Brown, Rotoroa Island Trust chair. "We're called Kiwis, therefore if we don't have them, how could we be called Kiwis?"

More than 90 percent of kiwi chicks are killed by predators each year. Ms Wybrow is among the people attempting to change those statistics - she's been taking care of Morehu along with fellow female brown kiwi chicks Mahaki and Makona right from the first day.
As eggs they're turned and cooled in incubators. Then they're transferred into their makeshift burrows, where the chicks are constantly weighed, fed and kept an eye on.
"You can see simply with their size how they're so vulnerable, so there's absolutely nothing they are able to do against a dog or a stoat," says Ms Wybrow.
The chicks drastically lose weight once they're hatched, so it's about making sure they return up to allow them to be released.
Lucky for Morehu and her friends, that is what happened. Now they're making their method to Rotoroa Island.
For everyone involved, the chance to meet our feathered namesake is an overwhelming experience.
"This may be the top of my bucket list," says kiwi fan Polly Nash. "Everything went wrong with intending to come here and suddenly everything just happened this morning, and it's just, wow. I can't let you know that I felt. It was so moving, so beautiful."
Last month three male kiwi chicks were released. Today, three female and Morehu was one of them. Her 3x Slimming Power name means 'survivor', which is quite fitting because this project is all about the security and boosting the populace of the fragile species, ultimately making certain they do actually survive.
